PARASITES LOST

  1. PARASITES LOST - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the paperback, "DESTINIES" edited by Jim Baen.

You probably think that my mind was occupied with the story I was illustrating when I was working on this drawing, but as usual, once I am satisfied with a preliminary drawing and go on to do a finished version, the process seems to go automatically and my mind often switches to other subjects as I complete the drawing.

While I was inking the small chubby guy in the background, the image of W.C. Fields came to mind, probably because I had recently read about him in a magazine article that revealed the screwball nature of some of Hollywood's celebrities. And W.C. Fields was one of them. This actor-comedian was so scared of his fortune being stolen he decided to open a bank account in every town he visited, using a secret name for each account. But he never wrote his "aliases" down, nor the cities or banks where he deposited his money. He feared the list might be found by someone who would then go around the country to all the banks and withdraw his money.

And the time came when he could remember only 23 of his aliases, out of an estimated 700. Fields made a lot of money in his lifetime, and most of it is probably "safely" hidden under funny names that you would expect only Fields would invent. A fortune lying in idle bank accounts in nameless cities throughout the country. How sad is that!.

And how odd that things like this should occupy my mind while I work on an illustration.
